Football 101 Women: Learn the Game from Sarah Spain: Part 2 of 2

I spoke to some really interesting guys in Tampa–legends like Mercury Morris, Tony Dorsett and Roger Staubach–but I think my favorite football player to interview is Bears cornerback Peanut Tillman. He’s a fantastic guy with a great sense of humor and he definitely knows how to work it for the cameras. He’s got a future in TV after his career is over, for sure. I did a really funny piece with him where I did a mock tryout for the Bears. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPmh4njOrsI)

Football 101 Women: Learn the Game from Sarah Spain: Part 1 of 2

I was only five years old when the ‘85 Bears won it all, so for my whole life the city has been looking back on one of the greatest teams ever–one that I was too young to enjoy rooting for. As I got older, though, I began to really appreciate the real athleticism of football players. Speed, strength, toughness, jumping ability, hand-eye coordination–you gotta have it all to succeed in the NFL. Now I love it so much it frustrates me that football isn’t a women’s sport, too. I would’ve been a fantastic wide receiver in my prime…although now I think I’m more of a tight end.

Fantasy Football: A Woman’s Perspective

Written by Trisha P.
Believe it or not, my husband actually said, “Hey baby, I need you to draft my fantasy team for me, there is just no way I can get out of work in time.” I had no idea what kind of “fantasy” world I was about to enter, with team names like Mc Lovin and Rock-afire Explosion. I would share my husband’s team name, however my face gets red just thinking about it, and he’s much too old to have a name like that anyway.

I knew I was in trouble when I walked into a room full of stone-faced men, each with a laptop and pages, I mean PAGES, of research notes about their team hopefuls. I, on the other hand, walked in with a one year old, a diaper bag and some tasty ham roll-ups I whipped up for the occasion.

Susan’s Journey: Football 101 with the Chicago Bears

A few lessons learned from Chicago Bears equipment manager Tony Medlin:
• Players bring two jerseys to each game so they have a back-up
• The players must wear uniforms and equipment displaying logos of their brand sponsor or they are fined $$ (it’s different for every team, Brian Urlacher, for example is sponsored by Nike)
• The Chicago Bears lockers are organized by position
• The players’ shoes have their own carrying case!
• And Lisa asked the question everyone wanted to know – “why do the players wear elbow pads?” The Answer: To make their arms look bigger…ha

The Football 101 Women attend our first Football 101 with the Bears!

Oh what a night! The Football 101 Women attended our first Football 101 with the Bears. Robbie Gould, Earl Bennett, Brett Basanez, Caleb Hanie, Nick Roach and Staley the Bear were all in attendance. We talked a bit of ball, a bit of dating and not surprisingly the Q&A portion of the eve went to the inevitable “Boxers or Briefs” question. And just so you know, Robbie Gould goes commando.

Nick Roach represented the D-Line and talked to a giddy crowd of 750 women about gap control, coverage, zone defense and man-to-man coverage. And on a personal note, he dabbles in cooking:)
