Turkey and Pigskin: A Thanksgiving Tradition

Just as we were taught in elementary school, Thanksgiving started centuries ago with the pilgrims and Indians coming together with a large feast. Little did they know hundreds of years later the tradition they started would go hand-in-hand with one of America’s greatest pasttimes: football, of course! Football and Thanksgiving just go together, like peanut butter and jelly, mashed potatoes and gravy, Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler. Thanksgiving Day consists of consuming way too many calories to count, while huddled around a television with your family, watching the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys, among others. The Lions and Cowboys are two... Read More...

Frugal Football Fan

It has been a very tough economy the past couple years. Not just with employment, the housing market, and the stock exchange – but in football as well.  So it’s no surprise that the fans across the nation are stressing over decisions like: whether or not to renew season tickets, purchase fan gear/apparel, or go to sports bars to watch the games. Times are tough, but that shouldn’t mean we can’t still enjoy and support the sports that we enjoy watching so much! Here are some helpful money-saving tips and ideas for this football season: Make your own fan gear Have you ever walked... Read More...

Part 1 of 2: Get Ready for Some Football…and Get Dressed for the Weather!

By Carolyn Todd Recently Football 101 Women featured an article about Victoria Secret’s new “pink” line of NFL clothing.  That’s pretty cool if you’re into fashionable gear for a party at home surrounding your TV. But let’s face it.  After October rolls around, it gets mighty cold when you’re watching games from the stands, especially in Chicago or in Big Ten country! The priority if you’re outdoors is to stay warm and dry. The brands I mention below are hardly sexy or fashionable.  But they work! In fact let me start by telling you what I wore a few Saturdays ago to the... Read More...

Lauren Temmler: The Giant Among the Bears…

For my entire life, fall Sundays have meant Giants football. My mom moonlighted as an ER nurse most weekends, so my dad wisely taught his young daughters the magic of football. This was mainly to cut down on his time spent playing Ken to our multiple Barbies, so a smart move all around. Living in Chicago for the better part of the last decade has taught me two things: One that everyone has the worst fans; and two, that finding a bar with the Sunday Ticket and good drink specials is not easy.... The latter isn’t true for all of us non-Bears... Read More...

Fans Tell All: Team Granny Pants Goes Down!

By Kelly Bichkoff The first week of the 2010-2011 NFL fantasy season and my team gets SHELLACKED!  Final score: Titans 107.76, Granny Panties 55.81.  And, to add insult to injury, my team was in 6th place out of 10 teams in terms of overall points scored.  Hopefully next week will be better against Team Cynnabuns.... How do you score points in fantasy football? Every league is different, but in ours it’s pretty basic.  Your QB (quarterback) scores 1 point for every 50 yards he passes the ball and 6 points when he throws a TD (touchdown) pass, your RBs (running backs)...
