Fantasy Football: A Woman’s Perspective

Believe it or not, my husband actually said, “Hey baby, I need you to draft my fantasy team for me, there is just no way I can get out of work in time.” I had no idea what kind of “fantasy” world I was about to enter, with team names like Mc Lovin and Rock-afire Explosion. I would share my husband’s team name, however my face gets red just thinking about it, and he’s much too old to have a name like that anyway.

I knew I was in trouble when I walked into a room full of stone-faced men, each with a laptop and pages, I mean PAGES, of research notes about their team hopefuls. I, on the other hand, walked in with a one year old, a diaper bag and some tasty ham roll-ups I whipped up for the occasion. The guys were a bit tense as they worked through some trouble to log onto the fantasy website, finally ensuring their connections just before the first pick. Meanwhile,  I severely sweated it out myself, as I watched my curious little boy lunge for the unbelievably inticing red button on the power strip, the same power strip supporting all of those crucial connections. Disaster averted, just in time for me to hold him in one arm and let him eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, as I tried to figure out how in the world to draft a player with the other.

I wish I had not pronounced Jake Delhomme’s name as Jake Del-Homey, although the room erupted with laughter and that was a nice break from the eerie silence. Looking back, I also wish my husband had mentioned the minor detail (or any details for that matter) that I needed to pick one pro team as our entire defense, not multiple players. So, when one of the guys told me that Urlacher was still available, I would have laughed at the joke along with everyone else.

Anyway, my husband is currently tied for first place in his division, so could that possibly mean that picking a guy based solely on his good looks can work out overall? :)
