Chicago Bear Players with the Football 101 Women

Oh what a night! Robbie Gould, Earl Bennett, Brett Basanez, Caleb Hanie, Nick Roach and Staley the Bear were all in attendance. We talked a bit of ball, a bit of dating and not surprisingly the Q&A portion of the eve went to the inevitable “Boxers or Briefs” question. And just so you know,  Robbie Gould goes commando.

Nick Roach represented the D-Line and talked to a giddy crowd of 750 women about gap control, coverage, zone defense and man-to-man coverage. And on a personal note, he dabbles in cooking:)

Here is a snapshot of a play the Offense explained to us called “Near-Left-Kick-200-Ohio-2-Dragon” (yes, I was taking notes)

Here’s the breakdown so the players know what to do with the call:

  • Near-Left = type of formation
  • Kick-200 = direction to move or protect the ball
  • Ohio-2-Dragon = defines who the receiver is and the route they are going to run

There are literally hundreds of play calls that the players have to memorize. We learned that the quarterback and the lead defensive player have radios in their helmets. You can tell who has a radio on by the neon green sticker on the back of the helmet. Each play is giving 40 seconds to get organized and to the line of scrimmage. When the play clock gets down to 15 seconds the man behind the curtain (whoever it is) turns the signal off. It’s kind of a do-or-die situation.

I don’t do well with time lines so I would freak out. We loved the evening, and there is more to come! Wait till you see the photo of the showers!
