A fan on our Football 101 Women Facebook page posed a question recently: “Why do guys LOVE football so much?” Besides the beer, sexy cheerleaders and competition, what is it about football that attracts so many men across the globe?
A hybrid of the more violent game of rugby and soccer, some might say football is the perfect level of contact, violence and excitement.
Or maybe it’s cultural ties. A truly American sport, many men and women grew up with football: watching it on TV, hearing about it from their older brothers, playing a version of it at family gatherings. Just ask Lisa about good ole’ Missouri!
But do you know what I really think?…Entertainment value: music, dancing and great outfits!
Football is like Glee Club…
A few times now, I have mentioned my current obsession with the popular Fox TV show “Glee.” A smart, humorous take on being cool in high school, Glee focuses on the feud between football and the sing and dance group, going back and forth between what”club” you need to join to raise your status.
What’s so interesting is that the two often overlap. In one episode, the flamboyant Glee member Kurt joins the football team and teaches them all a warm-up dance to Beyonce’s “All the Single Ladies.” It’s true – dancing helps the big boys’ coordination. Just ask Herschel Walker. In fact, the touchdown dance is one of the game’s most important plays!
In another episode, Finn, the popular quarterback is “discovered” singing in the shower and the Glee coach convinces him he has talent. He joins the club, and as time goes by, the lines are blurred. Both teams strategize, practice, dress up, and perform! It’s all about entertaining —entertaining the crowd. This is my favorite reason why football is so popular, but there are so many more. I’d love to hear yours.
